Chapter in the Springer volume “Drugs and Human Behavior” introducing Communities That Care to a Brazilian and wider Portuguese-speaking readership. The authors describe CTC as a community-based system that combines the assessment of risk and protective factors for drug use, violence and interpersonal aggression with a survey of community knowledge, goals and values, producing a community profile from which collectively agreed actions and evidence-based programmes are chosen. They place CTC among the most widely used prevention systems in the world, implemented and tested in more than 500 US communities and adapted in Australia, Canada, Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands and Latin American countries including Colombia, Chile and Mexico. The chapter then discusses the prospects for adapting and implementing CTC in Brazil, anticipating the Comunidades que Cuidam pilot that the same group later launched. It is a narrative overview without new data, useful as an orientation to the Latin American branch of the CTC family.
