Summary
Large cross-sectional validation study from Colombia testing whether the risk and protective factors measured by the Comunidades Que se Cuidan youth survey, the Colombian adaptation of the Communities That Care Youth Survey, actually relate to substance use there. Data came from 50,946 adolescents aged 10–19 in 23 communities surveyed between 2012 and 2016. Logistic regressions related each of 14 risk and protective factors to lifetime, past-year and past-30-day use of alcohol, cigarettes, cannabis and other illegal drugs, adjusting for age, sex and their interactions with each factor. All associations were statistically significant (p < .001); about 3% of the effects were very small, 52% small, 43% medium and 7% large. Age, sex and their interactions with the factors were significant for most factors. The authors conclude that the factors are valid targets for planning and evaluating data-driven community prevention in Colombia. The design is cross-sectional, so it establishes association rather than prediction.
