Summary
Qualitative study from Brazil bringing environmental psychology into dialogue with Communities That Care. The authors asked how place identity and place attachment shape whether community leaders commit to the CTC process, using one district of Florianópolis as the setting. Methods combined walks through the neighbourhood, observation of environmental traces and semi-structured interviews; the material was analysed thematically and organised into two categories, “affect and interactions” and “place and belonging”. The turning points in leaders’ relationship to the process were the perceived importance of cultural practices, socio-environmental care, safety and habitability, and identification and affection for the community. The authors conclude that a strong relationship with place – identity, attachment, shared values and experience of collective action – strengthens adherence to CTC and eases the planning of community prevention against drug use and violence. The study is small and interpretive; its contribution is to name the local, emotional preconditions of coalition engagement that implementation checklists rarely capture.
