Sammanfattning

Master's thesis in public health at the University of Tartu, supervised by Kersti Pärna and Karin Streimann, using the 2022 pilot data of the Estonian Communities That Care Youth Survey (Hooliva Kogukonna Noorteuuring) from Hiiumaa and Märjamaa parishes (n = 250, ages 12 to 19). It assesses the internal consistency of the risk and protective factor scales relevant to mental health, describes prevalence, and tests associations between factors and belonging to a mental health problem (MHP) risk group defined by the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, using chi-square tests and logistic regression. Of twenty scales, eleven reached acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha 0.71 to 0.93); the individual protective factor scales performed weakest. Overall 36.8 per cent of respondents fell into the MHP risk group, 26.5 per cent of boys and 48.3 per cent of girls. In adjusted models, girls (OR 2.49, 95% CI 1.38 to 4.50), family conflict (OR 2.38), poor family finances (OR 2.24) and interaction with antisocial peers (OR 2.24) were associated with risk-group membership. The author concludes that several scales need revision before a larger Estonian survey and that the results provide input for that expansion. Written in Estonian with an English summary.
