Sammanfattning

Doctoral thesis on how family and community protective factors modify the relation between family and community risk factors and adolescent alcohol and cannabis use, within the Social Development Strategy. The data come from the Croatian arm of the EU project Frontline Politeia: 733 pupils (47 per cent girls) of three secondary schools in Samobor completed the Croatian CTC questionnaire for children and young people (Mihić et al., 2010) in January 2023. Confirmatory factor and principal component analyses reduced the scales to six predictors, followed by ordinal regression and path analysis. Community disorganisation with availability of substances and weapons, and family history of antisocial behaviour with parental attitudes favourable to substance use and antisocial behaviour, predicted past-month alcohol use; for cannabis the same community factor and, in the family, antisocial history and parental attitudes were risks, while poor supervision and conflict lost significance in the moderation test. Community opportunities and rewards for prosocial involvement did not protect against either substance; family attachment with family opportunities and rewards protected against cannabis but not alcohol. No moderation effects were found, which the author reads as evidence that protection in one setting does not offset risks from another, supporting multi-component community strategies.
