Summary

Chapter 8 of Communities That Care: Building Community Engagement and Capacity to Prevent Youth Behavior Problems, describing the randomised controlled trial of CTC and showing that a community-based prevention system can be evaluated with this rigorous design. The Community Youth Development Study involved 24 communities in seven US states. The chapter explains how communities and state-level partners were recruited into the trial and which instruments were used to collect data from community key leaders, service providers, coalition leaders and young people in CTC and control communities. It then summarises the findings: the intended changes in community-level processes, in the risk and protective factors reported by young people and in their behavioural and health problems, together with estimates of CTC's cost–benefit ratio. A concise, authoritative digest of the trial for readers who want the evidence base in one place before turning to the individual outcome papers.
