Cross-national comparison of the associations between risk and protective factors and adolescent drug use and delinquency in the Netherlands and the United States, using the Communities That Care Youth Survey administered in schools in both countries to pupils aged 12 to 17; the Dutch data come from the neighbourhoods of the 2008 to 2011 CTC effect study and the US data from the Community Youth Development Study. Results: levels of exposure to risk and protective factors were generally similar in both countries, and the factors shown to be associated with drug use and delinquency among US adolescents were significantly related to the same outcomes among Dutch youth. The main exception concerned alcohol: Dutch pupils perceived their parents' attitudes as more favourable towards alcohol use, and these attitudes predicted regular drinking more strongly in the Netherlands than in the United States. Conclusion: the risk and protective factors measured by the survey are relevant targets for prevention in both countries, which supports the transfer of the CTC assessment logic to a European setting. A correlational comparison of two non-random samples; it does not evaluate CTC's effects.
