Two-page article in German from forum kriminalprävention (3/2018) that presents Communities That Care as an overall strategy for developmental prevention at municipal level. Starting from the observation that many local prevention activities run side by side without anyone knowing what they achieve, the author describes how CTC gives municipalities the instruments and methods to target their prevention work more precisely and concentrate scarce resources on effective programmes. The strategy, developed in the United States and transferred to Germany by the Landespräventionsrat Niedersachsen in a 2009–2012 model trial, has been used in various municipalities since 2013 and is implemented in five consecutive phases: clarifying readiness and framework conditions, setting up organisational structures, compiling a data-based community profile from the CTC youth survey, developing an action plan around the most important risk and protective factors with programmes from the Grüne Liste Prävention, and anchoring the plan in regular structures. The article closes with the new nationwide transfer office founded with the DFK and DPT in September 2018 and an Auridis-funded project on linking CTC to statutory youth welfare planning in Braunschweig and the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald.
