Practice report in German from forum kriminalprävention (3/2018) on Augsburg, one of the first large German cities to implement Communities That Care city-wide rather than in a single neighbourhood, and on what that scale demands of a city administration. The author, project lead for CTC in Augsburg, describes two fields of action from the first two CTC phases. The first is cross-departmental cooperation: CTC sits with the city’s Office for Municipal Prevention, a staff unit of the department for public order, health and sport, and is steered technically by a cross-departmental CTC working group drawn from youth welfare planning, education planning, youth services and crime prevention. The second is spatial planning: to obtain small-area results from the CTC student survey, Augsburg used its 24 established social monitoring districts rather than its 42 city districts; around 3,000 pupils took part, 19 districts reached at least 50 respondents, four were merged and one excluded. The interim verdict is that neither challenge overwhelmed the administration, and that a well-chosen planning grid and embedding in existing structures are the conditions for tailored city-wide prevention.
