Samenvatting

Master's thesis that applies the adapted Croatian version of the Communities That Care Youth Survey to an island setting. After reviewing risk and protective factors in the individual, family, school and community domains, the CTC survey and the specifics of Croatian islands, the author reports a self-report survey of 110 children and young people on the island of Vis: 35 primary-school pupils (51.4 per cent boys) and 75 secondary-school pupils (49.3 per cent boys), drawing on a 2015 assessment report for the island. School-related risk factors were grade repetition, low perceived interest of lessons, a lack of leisure activities and parents uninformed about their children's successes at school; protective factors were academic achievement, few absences, attachment to teachers and teachers who notice prosocial behaviour. The strongest community risk factor was the high availability of substances, alcohol above all, together with a low perceived harmfulness of drinking in the community. Prosocial orientation, self-esteem and the weight given to parents' opinions appeared as protective, lower self-confidence and the weight given to peers' opinions as risks. The thesis is a small descriptive needs assessment intended as a basis for planning prevention on Vis; it contains no evaluation.
