Samenvatting
Master's thesis documenting the first and, to date, only Austrian application of an adapted Communities That Care Youth Survey. In 2013 the Institut Suchtprävention (pro mente Oberösterreich), then the Austrian partner of the EU-funded CTC European Network, ran the survey in the Upper Austrian market town of Sierning as part of a municipal addiction-prevention project begun in 2009. The German questionnaire of the Lower Saxony SPIN project was adopted almost verbatim, with a few items adjusted, some scales dropped and local questions added, and delivered online as a household survey: all 541 residents aged 13 to 17 were invited by letter, 143 completed it and 119 valid cases were analysed. The thesis presents prevalences, community ratings and risk and protective factor profiles by domain. Alcohol and tobacco use lay above the Austrian average while illicit drug use was negligible; family risk factors were largely absent and community protective factors moderate. Of 26 scales, 17 reached Cronbach's alpha above 0.60 and 12 above 0.70. Transferability to rural Austrian municipalities is judged good in principle, provided evidence-based programmes, training and funding exist; the author also records scepticism within his institute that CTC was too American. No CTC process followed the survey.
