Summary
Pilot study on the Portuguese adaptation of the Communities That Care Youth Survey (CTCYS), the instrument that measures the risk and protective factors predicting adolescent substance use, violence and delinquency. Adapted in 2022, the Portuguese version covers the community, family, school and individual/peer domains. The US questionnaire was translated and refined with focus groups of students and professionals, then pre-tested in one municipality of the Azores to check internal consistency; the final version was administered to 1,218 students across the Autonomous Region of the Azores and re-examined for reliability and construct validity. The adapted structure captured the intended risk and protective factors, and the clearest associations emerged for psychoactive substance use. The authors conclude that the CTCYS is a workable tool for identifying the risk factors that matter most for adolescent substance use in Portugal and for directing community prevention, a first step towards CTC-style community profiles in another European country.
